[edit] Story
Kallamehr lies defenceless. The army is away, facing an invasion to the north, and now a new threat is at hand - another enemy from the east! Lady Carolina of Kallamehr summons YOU, a famous adventurer, to her aid. But can you help? Will you manage to preserve this stronghold of Good against the invading hordes? Or is this task beyond even your heroic abilities? You will need your wits as well as your sword of Fangthane steel to prevent the sands of time engulfing the city...
The book is mostly set in and around the city of Kallamehr. A strange army, whose nature is unknown, attacks the lands surrounding the city, and whole villages are found deserted; and moreover, a traitor lurks in Lady Carolina's court itself. The player eventually has to travel to the spirit planes to defeat Bykhos, Master of the Abyss, but in order to gain true victory, he/she must make an ultimate sacrifice, which, however, (in its own way) provides the greater reward.
[edit] Trivia
The Riddling Reaver makes a small appearance on the front cover of the book. You can see his face looking out of the floating prison bars; front, bottom and opposite the nose of the villain's face. The Reaver's face is green with a red hood and was lifted from the cover illustration of The Riddling Reaver RPG book that was printed a few years before.
The Reaver makes appearances in all four of Paul Mason's Fighting Fantasy gamebooks: Slaves Of The Abyss, Black Vein Prophecy, The Crimson Tide, and Magehunter.
[edit] Other references
The city of Kallamehr is one of the settings in the Fighting Fantasy group adventure book The Riddling Reaver, which also features the titular character - a minor servant of the Titan god of Luck, Logaan the Trickster - and Lady Carolina, two personae who appear in this volume. Chronologically, The Riddling Reaver is set some months or years before the events covered in this gamebook.
Several of the characters seem to borrow their names from Gnosticism - Bythos, Sige and Alethia are all major concepts aeons.
