Occupation of the Baltic states
The occupation of the Baltic states was the occupation sui generis[1] of the three Baltic states: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania by the Soviet Union under the auspices of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact on 14 June 1940 followed by their forcible incorporation into the USSR as constituent republics,[2] as well as the subsequent occupation of the Baltic republics by Nazi Germany on 22 June 1941 and incorporation into the Reichskommissariat Ostland of the Third Reich which lasted until the Soviet Union regained full control over the Baltic states in May 1945. The Baltic states regained independence on 20–21 August 1991.
